5 important questions to ask yourself before starting a training and nutrition program

If you are thinking about starting a training and nutrition program, it’s imperative you have the correct mindset and a clear thought process. Asking yourself the 5 following questions-really digging in and getting to the root of things-BEFORE you begin the journey makes a HUGE difference and gets you off on the right foot:

1. Why do you want to workout and/or change your nutrition?

2. Why is that important?

3. Why now?

4. What happens if you DON’T get in shape, change your eating habits, lose fat, get healthy, etc.?

5. What happens if you achieve success and reach your goals? How is your life going to be better and different?

It’s amazing how much better your adherence and consistency is when you are actually forced to look inward and answer these questions honestly. Many have never really thought about it before, which is why nothing has ever really “stuck”.

It’s not enough to just say “I want to lose X amount of body fat”, or, “I want to get healthier.” Why? Why do you want to do that? Why now? How are things going to be better? How are things going to be worse if it doesn’t happen?

I’ve asked these questions to many people over the years, and it’s amazing where some of the conversations have went and what they have revealed. What started, seemingly, as a discussion on nutrition and training turns into a deep conversation on relationships, family, psychology, upbringing, past demons, etc.

Bottom line: You need to identify and understand your own intimate, personal reasons for getting in shape, changing your lifestyle and eating habits, and understand how and why that impacts your life for the better (or worse).
