Metabolic Recovery
So I was going through the biweekly check in report of a client of mine and thought I'd post up some of her commentary in an effort to offer up some hope for those who have recognized the signs of metabolic issues in their own bodies.
This is a long-term client of mine who came to me with what she'd describe as an unresponsive body. In her own words, she came from what's very typical of today's contest prep circles:
"insane amounts of cardio plus a crazy competition prep, and the result was a terrible rebound and a severely damaged metabolism. I gained 30 lbs over the course of few months, despite eating super clean and training regularly."
Remember from the Metabolic Mind Games article that one tell-tale sign of a problem is a disproportionate amount of weight gain for a given number of calories. That is, far more weight ends up being gained than should be for the amount of calories being consumed. A case where X calories should not equal Y lbs of weight gain.
So back when we first started, we were dealing with what was essentially a body that had been beaten on too hard, and for too long. Eventually your body stops working with you and starts reacting and working against you.
A lot of people who find themselves in the situation talked about in the Metabolic Mind Games article can find themselves frustrated ... beyond frustrated. Add perhaps some desperation to the mix. Maybe a feeling of hopelessness when they realize that even a ton of hard work and hard dieting just isn't working anymore? The thought might then be, now what? What's left for me to do? What MORE do I have to do here?
My point has always been that there is another way. And while it might, and likely will in many cases, take an extended period of time to get things back on track physiologically (albeit perhaps not 100% in some cases), if you're patient enough and you start working WITH your body, things can come around and improve dramatically.
Which brings me back to the biweekly I referenced in the beginning. Take a look at some of these comments being made, and remember where she came from (note, she tends to be a rather funny one):
"Erik my man!! You've turned me into a lean, mean fat-burning machine... the fat just melts off."
"Where am I?? Am I in the Twilight Zone? Well it feels like it compared to the unreal progress I'm feeling these days. I'm all ripping up, wearing tighter tops to the gym, clothes getting looser, all my (tight) summer clothes fit again, definition starting to appear in my arms. Everything rolling on high speed now in the right direction."
"HELLO??? Are you kidding me with this? I feel like I'm in a Brady Bunch show, this is all too "happy happy" to be true, I'm in Metabolic heaven and you're God. I can't believe I'm losing while still stuffing my face full with carbos. This meal plan with all the yumminess makes the '120 meals straight' easy peasy."
Hopefully the above quotes offer a bit of hope (it should!) to those knee deep, or even just starting out on their own recovery paths. This girl has her life and her physique back ... without having to kill herself to do it.
Balance!
I still have plans on posting up an interview with three clients as I mentioned in the Metabolic Mind Games article. Stay tuned!
