Are you willing to let go of who you are to become the person you want to be?

“You can never become who you want to be until you can drop who you used to be.” – T.D. Jakes

This is the kind of quote you might see on an inspirational Facebook meme and throw down a quick “like” to show agreement but I think that, while people might like the IDEA of this quote, very few really grasp the seriousness of what is being said.

Everyone wants to change where they are in some respect whether it is in terms of their physique, their relationships, or their finances.

However, what I think many people fail to realize going in is that you simply cannot be the person you want to be and the person you currently are at the same time.

There are going to need to be changes in your life that can range from very small to very large. And some of those changes may be very easy while others may be very difficult.

You may need to bring food to family functions and be scrutinized by others who don’t understand your goals.

You may have to give up some of your precious TV time to make time for the gym and food prep.

You may find that some of your old friends don’t like the “new you” and begin to cut you out of plans because you’re not as fun to be around when you’re not eating what they’re eating.

You may even discover that your job requires too much travel, is too demanding, too stressful, and undermines your attempts to improve your health.

Sure, your family will get used to your new style of eating, you’ll learn to enjoy the gym as much as you once did television, you’ll make new similarly-minded friends, and you’ll likely be able to land yourself a new job too. But seeing that when you’re in the midst of it is tough.

The main point here is that there are going to be hard times and hard decisions. If you want change, there is going to be a cost.

You have to determine for yourself whether you’re willing to let go of who you are to become the person you want to be.
